Our Programs and Activities - Economic Inclusion

ORPE’s activities are designed to address multiple dimensions of economic inclusion—ranging from financial access and education to employment and entrepreneurship. Below are some of the key programs and examples of ORPE's activities that align with our mission:

Program Name:  Financial Freedom for All

Objective: To ensure that underserved communities, particularly women, youth, and rural populations, have access to banking services, loans, and financial literacy programs.

Key Activities:

  • Mobile Banking Initiatives: Partner with local banks and mobile payment platforms to provide financial services to individuals in remote or underbanked areas. For example, ORPE collaborates with organizations like M-Pesa in Kenya to provide mobile money services to rural communities, enabling them to access financial tools without requiring a physical bank account.

  • Financial Literacy Workshops: Conduct workshops to teach financial management, savings, budgeting, and investment skills. These workshops are tailored to low-income families, small business owners, and youth, helping them manage their finances effectively.

Impact: ORPE organized a Financial Literacy Week in a rural area where only 30% of the population had access to banking. Over 500 community members attended workshops on how to save, invest, and access mobile banking platforms like M-Pesa, leading to a 40% increase in the number of people registering for mobile financial services.

Program Name: Education for Empowerment

Objective: To provide education and vocational training to marginalized groups, particularly women and youth, equipping them with the skills necessary to enter the job market or start their own businesses.

  • Vocational and Technical Training: Partner with local vocational schools and online platforms like Coursera or Udemy to offer courses in fields such as technology, construction, and healthcare. Impact: ORPE’s Women in Tech scholarship program awarded full scholarships to 100 young women from rural areas to pursue coding boot camps and online courses in data science. These women have gone on to secure jobs with tech companies, contributing to their local economies and creating role models for others.

Program Name: Pathways to Employment

​

Objective: To connect job seekers, especially from marginalized communities, with employment opportunities and ensure fair working conditions.

Key Activities:

  • Job Placement Partnerships: Partner with local businesses and international companies to create job placement programs, targeting youth, women, and people with disabilities. This includes job fairs, career counseling, and soft skills training.

  • Inclusive Hiring Advocacy: Work with businesses to promote inclusive hiring practices, encouraging them to hire individuals from underrepresented groups. ORPE provides support to businesses by creating inclusive hiring guidelines and organizing workshops on the benefits of diversity in the workplace.

Impact: ORPE facilitated a Job Fair for Disadvantaged Youth in a major urban area, connecting over 200 young people with employers committed to diversity. 35% of the participants were hired within three months, with a special focus on those from minority ethnic groups.

Program Name: Empowering Entrepreneurs

Objective: To provide the resources, mentorship, and funding necessary for entrepreneurs, particularly from marginalized backgrounds, to launch and scale their businesses.

Key Activities:

  • Microfinance and Seed Funding: Provide microloans and grants to small business owners in low-income communities, helping them start or expand businesses. ORPE partners with microfinance institutions like Grameen Bank to offer low-interest loans to entrepreneurs.

  • Business Incubators and Accelerators: Develop and run incubator programs to support small businesses in sectors like agriculture, tech, and retail. These programs provide mentorship, access to capital, and market networks to help businesses grow.

  • Entrepreneurship Training: Offer workshops on business planning, marketing, and financial management to equip entrepreneurs with the tools to succeed. These programs are aimed at individuals from low-income and rural backgrounds.

Impact: ORPE’s StartUp for All program helped launch 50 small businesses in a rural community by providing micro-loans and training on entrepreneurship. One notable success was a small farm-to-table restaurant started by a group of women, which has now expanded to employ 15 people and serve as a model for other aspiring entrepreneurs.

Program Name: Equal Opportunities for All

Objective:

  • To harness the transformative power of technology in addressing critical challenges such as education inequality, limited healthcare access, and economic disparity, empowering underserved communities to thrive in the digital era.

​

What Was Done:

  • We conducted hands-on digital literacy programs tailored to different age groups and skill levels, distributed technology resources such as tablets and internet hotspots, and collaborated with local and international partners to provide online education platforms, telehealth services, and digital entrepreneurship training. Special focus was given to women, youth, and marginalized groups to ensure inclusive impact.

Impact:

  • Over 10,000 individuals acquired vital digital skills, improving their employability and entrepreneurial opportunities. Access to telemedicine bridged healthcare gaps, reducing travel time and costs while improving patient outcomes. Schools and businesses adopted new digital tools, enhancing productivity and innovation. This program fostered a digitally empowered community poised for long-term growth and resilience in a rapidly evolving world.
